About GenEHR

Amongst other projects, our company is currently working with a team of software engineers, health informaticians and other stakeholders to produce an electronic health records system called GenEHR System. GenEHR System is our major innovation and pride; as it is built following international open data standards (openEHR Archetypes/Template, UMLS Semantic Mappings, Code Systems) and open source APIs and a strong consideration of  Africa’s healthcare context. GenEHR’s infrastructure is a collection of several APIs and independent applications that are integrated to function symbiotically. It has the potential for seamless semantic interoperability (data sharing) with other systems like the District Health Information System (DHIS-2).

GenEHR is designed to be comprehensive with features that can satisfy most, if not all primary health care activities, and also, public health reporting, drug prescription, booking and laboratory. Further details about the GenEHR project and how you can become part of it can be found here.

Taadom Digital Company Limited was founded by Dr Nsah Bernard (aka Ben Case) in late 2018.  Taadom Digital was inspired from Ben Case’s personal interest and curiosity on how to leverage ICT to improve people’s health and well-being. His earlier hobby, developing websites – with no coding skills whatsoever – started since 2007 when he was studying medicine in Cameroon. Since then, this quickly transformed into a passion and he was motivated to further his career as a health informatics specialist.  His strong desire to pursue this area of interest was motivated by the his observation that healthcare facilities were operating without computerised medical records. Even when few organisations opted to adopt an open source electronic medical records, they lacked the experts with advanced skills in knowledge engineering to deliver the best digital health products. This is why Taadom Digital was founded to help develop EHR systems that can help solve the challenges due to data capture, storage, reporting, visualisation, and/or information exchange in resource-limited settings. Taadom Digital’s first goal is to develop the GenEHR- an EHR system designed to represent the African health care context.

Become Africa’s #1 vendor of digital health products and services that solves the major data challenges of primary,  preventive care  and public health services in resource-poor settings by 2035.

The Team

Taadom is run by a multidisciplinary team of health professionals, computer engineers, data scientists, and civil society actors, with several years of experience in their respective disciplines. With our dynamic and highly trustworthy team, we execute projects, innovate and conduct research projects. This makes us a unique start-up organisation in Africa that is not afraid to take up new challenges and cover new grounds in the health information technology (IT) industry. [Meet the team]

Our goal is to enable digitisation, transformation and integration of information systems for the health, humanitarian, developmental, social, non-governmental and governmental sectors. Our works are centred around Taadom Digital’s GenEHR project. The aim of this project is to produce and deploy a standalone and comprehensive generic electronic health records system (EHR-S) or health information management system (HIMS) => GenEHR. We hope to enhance access to primary care, improve provider’s workflow and manage patient records in real-time.

The GenEHR is able to collect, query, retrieve, organise, visualise, store and share data seamlessly among health professionals and other stakeholders like the Ministry of Health. It has comprehensive features and API integrations. GenEHR is designed by Africans for Africa’s health and social sectors.[Find our more about the GenEHR Project]

We also offer consultancy services to organisations or an individual aiming to develop, implement and/or evaluate an health information system like EHRs, mobile health apps, eHealth services, Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS), e-Referral systems, eBooking etc. We guide and train individuals or organisations on a bespoke digital transformation strategy.

Each application developed by TD constitutes part of GenEHR’s APIs, integrating with each other to become a powerful tool, capable of addressing the needs of the primary care. For example, a telemedicine API can integrate easily with a mobile-based patient record system in such a way that data received through the telemedicine app, could be managed seamlessly as a completely new app.

Using digital tools to transform healthcare, improve population health and save lives

Through innovative approaches and team work, we adopted a bespoke digital transformation strategy for organisations.

TD takes up small or large scale projects depending on the business requirements of each organisation.

We provide access and promote the culture of using information technology within health and social sectors in Africa. We hope to raise enough awareness on the benefits of upgrading one’s business(es) with digital technology.

By implementing these strategies, we could improve patient experience and facilitate translational research.

To complete our goals, we adopted a community-oriented approach, which aims to engage stakeholders earlier in the development and deployment of the GenEHR System.

Each digital project realised will amount to become part of the GenEHR Project.

We look forward to creating a long-lasting partnership and collaboration with health care providers, Ministries of Health and international non-governmental organisations like World Health Organization, UNICEF, Africa CDC, Research Institutions etc. to help us build our vision, and together, make the world a better place.

People’s health and wellbeing is everything

We prioritise our clients’ needs and/or requirements to achieve optimal patient care.

TD is a social enterprise that is registered as a for-profit business with nonprofit missions. Meaning, besides being a health information system’s vendor with money-making interest, we also create and deliver a wide-range of free digital services to support various communities and stakeholders.

For-profit model

TD is registered as a private limited company. We provide invoices for our products and services and in turn expect clients who benefit to commit in completing the payment within the allocated time-frame as per our terms of reference and user agreement. TD allocates 30% of its profits and almost 100% of its resources to support the non-profit missions.

Non-profit model

TD has created two online resources aimed at educating, informing, guiding and outsourcing information to support our clients and people who seek health and social services around our communities, and also, to support professionals to improve on their day-to-day delivery of services.

1. Taadom Health platform is a free virtual healthcare service aimed at assisting people (users) ask questions to healthcare experts. The health experts can then provide medical advice that can permit users make quick and timely decisions for their health and wellbeing. Also, a user can explore and read free health articles, book an appointment with a clinic, or be referred to a specialist.

2. Taadom Easy Finder allows users to easily find a range of opportunities like jobs, scholarships, internships, hospital, free stuffs, medical supplies/devices etc around African communities.

What drives our company’s activities?

Most health care organisations in many countries in Africa like Cameroon, Nigeria, Malawi, Gabon etc., are still shying away from massive adoption of basic digital solutions such as websites or mobile apps, despite its potential for information sharing and communication on various healthcare activities. At the moment, information flow between consumers of health care services and health care providers is still one-sided; thus, often limiting their ability to understand their health conditions, hence, preventing them from achieving optimal health and wellbeing. For instance, many patients in a country like Cameroon are not aware of which clinical services are offered by health centres, nor do they know the cost of procedures or medications. These one-sided knowledge on the delivery of health care services is often to the detriment of the patient. Our hope is to bridge this gap by building low-cost health information websites (eHealth applications) for healthcare organisations to permit their healthcare providers easily connect and communicate with their healthcare consumers. This in turn can increase the confidence and trust between them and their consumers, perhaps even improve on their health.

Another venue of concern is the lag in the adoption of Health Informatino Management System (HIMS) in Africa. Although, these had been proven to enhance clinical work-flow, prevent medical errors, and permit quality data collection. This is absolutely unacceptable in the 21st Century, where many countries are already moving towards taking advantage of ‘big data’, and artificial intelligence (AI). While the rest of the globe is becoming digitilised and growing smarter by the day, thanks to digital innovations, many establishments in Africa are still void of even the most basic information technology resources.

This is why, Taadom Digital has taken upon itself to become a “Digitilisation Evangelist” for Africa. Taadom Digital understands that the challenges for adopting digital solutions is often centred around the huge costs of implementation of information systems. We also believe it is because of the lack of knowledge, interest and skills on digital transformation strategies. Which is why, we wish to bring-forth resources in the most cost-effective manner through provision of free or low-cost digital products and services. Although we understand that many organisations or health care providers are still facing many HIMS adoption challenges, it is our heartfelt mission to close this gap by being instrumental in promoting and enabling digitial transformation across organisations in Africa before 2035.
